Dolly Lynch was not only the glue to holding her family together, but she was also the glue that held the artists together during their weekly paintings sessions. She was not afraid to introduce herself, make them feel welcome, and take them under her wing and give them the guidance and help they needed in order to improve their artwork! She was a natural at encouraging people to pick up a brush and try!
Dolly graduated from Carnegie Institute where she studied Art. Andy Warhol was a classmate of hers! She worked as the Inpatient Mental Health Activities Director at Latrobe Hospital for 25 years. 25 years of helping plan art activities for the patients. Painting, knitting, and everything in-between, Dolly was a beautiful example of helping people heal through Art.
Married to Bernard J. “Bernie” Lynch for 68 years, they had six children (five boys and one girl.) Over the years she has been able to welcome 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren into the world.
Dolly won numerous awards for her watercolor and oil paintings and was a member of the Latrobe Art Center, Latrobe Art League, Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Ligonier Valley, the Greensburg Art Club and the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society.
Dolly was a unique individual who had a way of brightening your day and making you feel better no matter what the situation was. Miss Gabi holds a very special place in her heart for Dolly, for she took Miss Gabi under her wing when she moved to Latrobe. “It always felt like ‘home’ when she would walk into the center. She just had that way of making everything feel ‘just right.’” says Miss Gabi.
Dolly passed away December 29, 2017 at the age of 90. Miss Gabi thanks Dolly for being a true friend and artist. “She taught me to take time to help everyone and to always be kind. Over the years, she always made me want to create. As I would see her painting with the artists and sharing her talents with everyone during workshops and open studio sessions, she would inspire me to draw. Now being surrounded by her artwork at my own studio, she continues to inspire me to create my own artwork and help others create as well. I’m so grateful, thankful, and blessed to have a little bit of Dolly with me everyday!”
Funds raised will go toward the “Dolly and Bernard Lynch Neighborhood Outreach Scholarship” - This scholarship is geared toward school districts, preschools, various community/neighborhood groups, and senior living of ALL abilities to find their voice through ART without financial barriers. These individuals are mentored by Miss Gabi through art and given the opportunity to have a place to go where they know, without a doubt, that they are safe and can feel free to be themselves. Dolly believed in the power of Art, and now Miss Gabi will continue to inspire and help others believe in that power as well. ART HEALS.
